Site details

Site description: A dam reservoir located on the border of hilly areas and plain fields in the middle part of Miyagi Prefecture, Lake Kejonuma has been maintained as a large reservoir for irrigation made in a valley of a hilly area. Trapa japonica thrive in the shallow water areas, while Phragmites australis and other hydrophytes grow along narrow zone of the shorelines. Although parks and other facilities are provided on the lakesides, other areas comprise paddy fields, fields, discontinuous secondary forests of Quercus serrata and Castanea crenata trees, plantation of Cyryptomeria japonica and scattered residential grounds -- an area of 'SATOYAMA' feature that is closely connected with human life.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
