Site details


Site description: Xianghai Nature Reserve is located at the western tip of the Songnen Plain, with Inner Mongolia to the west. The reserve has five core areas with a total area of 28,000 ha, which are zoned according to the distribution of the fauna and flora. There are many lowlands and lakes in the area, which are important breeding and staging sites for local and migratory birds, and 220 bird species have been recorded in the IBA.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: Mammals include Canis lupus, Vulpes vulpes, Mustela sibirica, Nyctereutes procyonoides, Meles meles and Lepus capensis.
