Site details

Site description: Located in Wafangdian City, central-western Liaoning. The IBA extends from Fuzhou Bay to the marshlands at the Fuzhou He estuary, and contains extensive tidal flats and reedbeds. The lower reaches of the Fuzhou He river do not freeze in winter and this is one of the main wintering grounds for waterbirds in northern China. The natural wetlands in the IBA were much more extensive prior to the 1960s but since then massive reclamation for rice paddies and shrimp ponds has reduced their area.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: No information.
Delineation rationale: Digitized by Wendall, roughly correct, however polygon v. crude
