Site details


Site description: The area is located about 420 km southeast of Arkhangelsk, on the eastern coast of the Kanin Peninsula, and covers the watersheds of the Torna and Shoina rivers, with the Shoina river forming the southern boundary of the site.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: The site is important for migrating waders in spring and autumn. Autumn migration is poorly studied. Many flocks congregate in different parts of the site and total 1000 moulting birds (Bucephala clangula, Aythya marila, Melanita nigra, Melanita fusca).
Delineation rationale: 2009-08-04: IBA area changed from 15,000 ha to 21,060 ha (by BL Secretariat, following RBCU spreadsheet of changes that need making). 2014-08-12 (BL Secretariat): centroid coords adjusted to 67°59'38'N 44°17'29'E and site area changed to (or confirmed as) 21060 ha (rounded), on basis of refined polygon downloaded from Spatial Database on Important Bird Areas of Russia 2014 (© Russian Bird Conservation Union, © Transparent World).

Habitats


Summary of habitats in KBA: The area consists of mud flats, coastal marshes, dunes and estuaries. A 2-5 m terrace with tundra vegetation lies adjacent to the low and flat plain.Legally the area is owned by the reindeer state farm; no habitat-damage from the grazing is apparent.
