Site details

Site description: Located on the southern slopes of the Altay Mountains, north of the Junggar Basin, 100 km south-west of Altay City and 370 km north of Urumqi. Ulungur Hu has an area of 739 km2 and is the second largest lake in Xinjiang, and it is linked to Jili Hu which has an area of 172 km2. The extensive reedbeds and marshes in the IBA are important breeding and staging areas for birds.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Vulpes vulpes and Gazella subgutturosa.
Delineation rationale: Boundary digitized by Tris Allinson at Birdlife International using Google Earth. Accuracy probably OK.
