Site description: Area located in the south of the Bryansk region.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: This place is one of only three in Europe, where as many as 9 species of woodpeckers breed together.
Delineation rationale: 2009-08-06: IBA area changed from 250,000 ha to 253,170 ha (by BL Secretariat, following RBCU spreadsheet of changes that need making). 2014-08-12 (BL Secretariat): centroid coords adjusted to 52°30'12'N 34°7'49'E and site area changed to (or confirmed as) 253170 ha (rounded), on basis of refined polygon downloaded from Spatial Database on Important Bird Areas of Russia 2014 (© Russian Bird Conservation Union, © Transparent World).

Summary of habitats in KBA: Bryanskaya is an interesting region from a biogeographic point of view. Three very different landscapes meet here: deciduous broadleaved forests, southern taiga forests, and forest-steppe.
