Site details


Site description: Located in Changtang, north-western Tibet. The average elevation of the IBA is 4,800 m, and it includes an extensive inland river system. The islets in the IBA’s lakes are important breeding grounds for birds.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Ursus arctos, Panthra uncia, Equus kiang and Pantholops hodgsoni.
