Site details


Site description: Located on the southern slopes of the central Himalayas, in Tingri County, to the south-west of Qowowuyag Mountain (8,201 m, the sixth highest peak in the world). The IBA has high mountains and deep valleys, and dense forests. The vegetation shows prominent vertical zonation, with broadleaf evergreen forest (1,600-2,500 m), coniferous-broadleaf mixed forest (2,500-3,100 m), alpine coniferous forest (3,100-4,000 m) and alpine scrub (4,000-4,500 m).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Presbytis entellus (a primate endemic to the Himalayas), Ursus arctos, Selenarctos thibetanus, Ailurus fulgens, Moschus chrysogaster and Capricornis sumatraensis.
