Site details
Site description: The nature reserve is located in the eastern part of Chongming Dao island, on the boundary of Chongming County, 40 km north-east of Shanghai City. Chongming Dao island is 76 km by 15 km, and was formed by siltation from sediment carried by the Yangtze River, and it is still growing eastwards by 130-140 m annually. The major habitat in the IBA is inter-tidal mudflats.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
