Site details

Site description: The eastern part of mangrove stand in Futian Nature Reserve is located at the mouth of the Shenzhen River, adjacent to Mai Po Nature Reserve in Hong Kong. The southern part of the nature reserve has an inter-tidal mudflat, but much of the area has been reclaimed for urban and industrial development. Every year a large number of migratory and wintering waterbirds utilize this wetland. Futian can be regarded as an important buffer area for Mai Po Nature Reserve, with birds using both Mai Po and the Futian IBA. Industrialization, urbanization and varies kind of pollution are threatening the natural environment in the IBA.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas) The site has been reviewed and re-confirmed as a KBA in the process of compiling the revised 2011 CEPF Ecosystem Profile for the Indo-Burma Hotspot.
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: No information.
Delineation rationale: Shenzhen county. Boundary digitized by Gill Bunting at Birdlife International using Google Earth. Accuracy probably OK..
