Site details
Site description: Bawangling is one of the four major forest areas in Hainan Province, and is located on the north-western edge of the Yajia Da Ling mountains. It has a large area of tropical monsoon rainforest, tropical rainforest, tropical montane rainforest, valley rainforest, tropical montane coniferous evergreen forest and stunted tropical montane forest.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. Alliance for Zero Extinction (2018): site confirmed as an AZE site during the AZE project (2015-2018). Taxonomy, nomenclature and Red List category follow the IUCN 2016 Red List.
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: The nature reserve supports the only surviving population of Nomascus hainanus. Other animals include Viverricula indica, Macaca mulatta, Cervus unicolor and Ratufa bicolor. Protected plants include Litchi chinensis var. euspontanea and Reevesia spp.
