Site details

Site description: Main function of this area is to protect swamp forest.Tidal mudflats stretched along of coastal, except sandy area in Cemara (inside Berbak National Park). The status of mangrove (bakau) forest is unknown, probably most of the area already cleared.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. KBA identified in the CI/CEPF Conservation Outcomes poster for Sumatra [Sundaland Hotspot] (2007). Taxonomy, nomenclature and threat status follow the 2004 IUCN Red List.
Additional biodiversity: Hutan bakau pantai timur is the only one mangrove (bakau) area in Jambi (Mijn & Rahman 1992), and is is a feeding site for more than 20000 waterbirds and wader during migration. In 1985 Danielsen & Skov (1987) found 7 colonies of Grey Heron Ardea cinerea, and one colony of Milky Stork Mycterea cinerea with at least 74 active nests. But in 1989 Danielsen et.al (1991) only found 4 colonies of Grey Heron Ardea cinerea, and the colony of Milky Stork Mycterea cinerea has gone. This area is one of the breeding area of Milky Stork Mycterea cinerea in Indonesia, apart from Rambut Island In Java, and there is a worry that this species is dissapearing because of the publications of this information(Wibowo & Suyatno 1998).Stretched of mangrove forest and remaining tidal have important values as feeding sites of waterbirds, but the status of 4 colonies of heron are unknown. The number of waterbirds along the pesisir pantai Jambi between 1984-1986 is bigger than the number in Riau (1984) but not as big as South Sumatra. Survey in 1984 (Silvius 1988) recorded:760 Milky Stork Mycterea cinerea 190 Lesser Adjutant Leptoptilus javanicus30 Black-headed Ibis Threskiornis melanocephalusMore than 37500 birds including 7500 Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa6200 Common Redshank Tringia totanus3500 Mongolian Plover Charadrius mongolus2300 Terek Sandpiper Xenus cinereus1500 Asian Dowitcher Limnodromus semipalmatus (1750 bird in 1985) and 11500 birds unidentified. The other important record is Greater Goldenback chrysocolaptes lucidus in mangrove forest (Silvius & Varheugt 1986). Non-bird biodiversity: Other biodiversity include Helarctos malayanus, Varanus salvator, Python reticulatus (Colijn 1999).
