Site details


Site description: Located 15 km north-west of Jember or 20 km east of Bondowoso, this area includes Gunung Argopuro (3088 m). There is a hotspring at the foot of Gunung Argopuro in the south of Aing Alkal River. Tunjung Lake is located on the southern part of the area. geologically this area is same with other formed mountains in Java & Bali (Beudels & Hardi 1980). The area is very steep with good forest condition.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: Cuon alpinus, Panthera pardus, Sus verrucosus and Trachypithecus auratus (Hedges & Tyson 1996, Whitten et.al.1996, Nijman 1997). Flora include Anophalis viscida, Elsholtzia pubescens, Euphorbia spp., Pteridium sp. and Giardinia palmata (Beudels & Hardi 1980, Whitten et.al.1996).

Habitats


Summary of habitats in KBA: Grassland plateau and Casuarina forest. Near the mountain top : grassland and lake covered by natural forest, mainly mountain rainforest. The lower mountain forest is rich, and located on the elevation of 1200-1900 m, with high trees (20-30 m) as the characteristic of this forest. The upper mountain forest above of 2000 m, indicated by a plenty of mosses on tree trunks. The grassland dominated by Imperata cylindrica (Beudels & Hardi 1980, MacKinnon et.al. 1982, Whitten et.al. 1996).

Threats


Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Wildlife hunting, burning of forest and grassland, vandalism has caused loss of archaeological remains (MacKinnon et.al.1982), regular use of the area by military units for exercises (Beudels & Hardi 1980).
