Site details

Site description: Agricultural landscape in the fertile Polabí region. This IBA is the largest wintering site of the Hen Harrier and the Short-eared Owl in the Czech Republic. It is situated in an agricultural landscape in the lowlands of the Loucna river. Since most of the streams in the area do not allow for fast enough draining, part of the site developed wetland vegetation with sedge stands, representing an ideal roosting site for the two raptor species. Fields of unharvested crops, lucerne, and meadows are used as feeding grounds by the two species.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.

Threats

Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Planned construction of the R35 highway threatens the area and the two criteria species. If it is built as planned, the most valuable part of the area will be destroyed, and also, there is a strong risk of collisions of birds with cars.
