Site details


Site description: A highly developed estuary on the Atlantic border between Spain and France. The site includes sandy beaches, cliffs, large areas of intertidal mud, grasslands, reedbeds (Phragmites) and some riverine woodland. Main human activities are agriculture, fisheries, tourism and industry.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: A very important area for passage and wintering seabirds and waders.
