Site details


Site description: Plain area in the Baixo Alentejo, with cultures of cereals and some places with evergreen woodland of oaks.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: It is an important area for steppic species. Includes about 10% of the national population of Falco naumanni and during the postnuptial season are important the populations of Otis tarda (5%) and Tetrax tetrax.Burhinus oedicnemus is common in this area.

Threats


Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: The area has not a conservation statute and is included in the watering irrigation area of Alqueva. Construction of an electric line, also for Alqueva, could cause disturbance to birds.
