Site details
Site description: This site is along mountain band in the littoral Alentejo. It is located in the hidrographical basin of River Mira and includes about a half of Albufeira de Santa Cara (Santa Clara lagoon ). The vegetation of this area presents signs of forestal interventions, with significative areas of eucalyptus, as well as evergreen woodland of Oak Quercus ilex and Quercus suber, with a variable density. In the open valleys of the tributaries of Mira and close to urban nucleus are extensive agriculture areas that are associated to pasturing. The humid enclaves have little patches of autoctonous oakland.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: This site is a continuity of the habitats that are in the mountains of Monchique, Caldeirão, Grândola and Cercal. It is important for breeding florestal species and specially for Southweastern population of Hieraaetus fasciatus. Also there are pairs of Circaetus gallicus and bubo bubo. In the open areas occur species like Elanus caeruleus, Circus pygargus or Tetrax tetrax.Southwest of territory is important for migrating passerines and for its migratory routes.

Threats
Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Forestal practices are managed for the production of wood and cork. The mechanic intervention for cleanning scrubs is indiscriminated and non selective, this causes high disturbances in the flora, fauna, soil and water. It is necessary a control (of forestal and cynegetic activities, tourism and recreation) in the most sensitive areas and seasons.
