Site description: A IBA compreende a zona da Baía das Contendas e a baía a norte desta, incluíndo o Ilhéu da Mina, e estende-se pela falésia para ambos os lados das duas baías. De entre os habitats presentes são de salientar as falésias com vegetação das costas macaronésicas e a vegetação vivaz das costas macaronésicas.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: Important for breeding seabirds. Had the largest colony of Roseate Terns of the archipelago for the last years.

Threats
Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Seabird colonies are disturbed by illegal recreation activities and affected by killings, especially at Ponta das Contendas. The absence of the establishment of the SPA by the regional law constitutes a weakness in its surveillance and legal protection. There is a management plan for the SPA Ponta das Contendas
