Site details
Site description: The site comprises saltpans, lagoons, sand and shingle beaches, and a small area of steppe, on Lanzarote. Human activities include exploitation of the saltpans.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: This site is important for breeding and wintering waterbirds. It is also one of the best sites in the Canary Islands for migrant waders, both in terms of the variety of species present and the numbers of individuals.

Threats
Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Threats include feral cats Felis catus that prey upon birds at night, the dumping of car oil into the lagoon (`Other' threat), and disturbance to birds caused by uncontrolled recreation and tourism. The area is a game refuge, and the local government undertook a census of wintering birds during 1993 and 1994.
