Site details


Site description: Sea cliffs and lava-fields (`malpaís') in the west of Lanzarote that support semi-desertic vegetation. There is no relevant human activity, other than some fishing.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The site is important for breeding seabirds and some steppic species.

Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Introduced rats Rattus and feral cats Felis catus impact on numbers of Calonectris diomedea. Tourists camping on the beaches disturb seabirds, and illegal hunting is also a problem.
