Site details

Site description: A river valley with meadows, lakes and forest tracts.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: Breeding waterbirds number 5,000-7,000 pairs in total, while up to 80,000 individuals congregate here on passage. The breeding bird data marked as `Extrapolation' is taken from Tishechkin et al. (1996), with total population estimates based on extrapolations from counts of singing males or pairs per km of river valley or per km of swamp habitat. These estimates cover the Ratno-Zhveche part of the Upper Prip'yat, but there is also qualitative data available for other parts of the Prip'yat valley.
