Site details

Site description: The island of Tiree lies in the Inner Hebrides of western Scotland, 17 km west of Mull in Argyll and Bute. Sleibhtean agus Cladach Thiriodh (Tiree Wetlands and Coast) consists of several areas of wetland, including habitats such as machair, heath and freshwater lochs, and extensive sections of the coastline, taking in the islet of Soa. The wetland areas support roost sites of significant numbers of wintering Greenland Branta leucopsis, Greenland Anser albifrons flavirostris, as well as breeding terns, waders and waterbirds.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: First identified as part of Tiree and Coll in 1989; this larger site was split into four separate component SPA/IBAs in 2007. SPA boundary used from JNCC; digitised at 1:10,000 scale.
