Site details


Site description: An estuary and bay with mudflats, sand and shingle-beaches, rocky areas, islets and cliffs. Human activities include fishing, hunting, tourism and sailing.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The site supports important tern colonies and is also important for wintering waterbirds. The site holds 20,000 or more waterbirds in winter, on a regular basis (including Branta bernicla 2,170; Haematopus ostralegus 1,590; Larus ridibundus 38,500 individuals).
Delineation rationale: Includes a large seaward extension area (162404 ha) delineated on the basis of foraging area of breeding seabirds.
