Site details
Site description: Located between the eastern Himalayas and central Nyainqêntanglha Mountain. Shaded slopes below 4,300 m are dominated by Picea spp. and Abies spp. while the sunny slopes at 3,700-4,200 m are dominated by montane Quercus spp., Sabina spp. forest occurs at 4,200-4,600 m, and alpine scrub and grassland above 4,600 m.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Selenarctos thibetanus, Ailurus fulgens, Capricornis sumatraensis and Naemorhedus cranbrooki.
Delineation rationale: Three IBAs of the 2004 pan-Asian book, Serkhyim La Mountain (SitRecID 15485; the former CN144; 30,000 ha), Lunang (SitRecID 15486; the former CN145; 30,000 ha) and Nyingchi (SitRecID 15487; the former CN146; 1,190,000 ha), have been merged and expanded to form the IBA Gongbo Nature Reserve (SitRecID 23235; CN149; 2,212,833 ha).
