Site details
Site description: These extensive open habitats are the most important nesting area of Montagu’s Harriers in Croatia. Succession of meadows results in developing white oak forests with the biggest Croatian population of Olive-tree Warbler. The main threats to birds are changes in traditional farming, agricultural intensification, excessive or illegal hunting and unregulated recreational activities and tourism.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: The 2005-IBAs/candidate SPAs of Hrvatsko zagorje (SitRecID 24022) and Ravni Kotari (SitRecID 24005) have been merged (and reduced) (maintaining the name of Ravni Kotari). Area reduced from 100,139 ha to 59,287 ha, as part of 2010 revision of IBAs/proposed SPAs.
