Site details
Site description: Seagrange Park is situated 1 km inland from Baldoyle and is separated from the estuary by Baldoyle village. This urban park is bounded on both the east and west by housing, to the north by a road and to the south by a railway line. Once farmed by a religious order, this flat, open area was developed as a recreational park in the early 1980’s. The eastern end has been particularly susceptible to flooding in recent winters (Harford 1994). Part of the park is used as a soccer pitch and is mostly mown grass. A section is now left unmown, and is developing into a marsh.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Other site values: Seagrange Park is owned by Fingal County Council. It is not formally protected as a natural heritage site, and no management plan has been formulated. The SEMPA group have proposed that the playing pitches be moved to a more suitable location so that the park can be managed entirely as a wildlife refuge.
