Site details
Site description: A large and diverse massif that has been deeply dissected by glacial action, but exhibits rounded summits. Landform and geological diversity has resulted in a wide range of upland vegetation communities including summit communities of cushion herbs, lichens and mosses. The site holds an assemblage of breeding upland birds.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Delineation rationale: First identified in 1992; boundary reduced to match SPA in 2007. 2000 area, 13715ha. SPA boundary used from JNCC; digitised at 1:10,000 scale.
