Site details

Site description: The Burry inlet forms a large intertidal area between the Gower peninsula and Llanelli. Large sand-dune systems and the most extensive area of saltmarsh in Wales occur within the IBA. The site attracts important numbers of wintering and passage wildfowl and waders.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Delineation rationale: First identified in 1989, the boundary was adjusted to match the SPA in 2007 (no significant change in area). SPA boundary used from JNCC; digitised at 1:10,000 scale.
