Site details
Site description: A large upland area, with stands of native pinewood Pinus sylvestris that support rich lichen communities. This is an important area for raptors and other specialist montane and forest birds.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: First identified in 1989 as Affric-Cannich Hills and Glens; renamed in 1992 as Central Highland Hills and Glens; 2007 split out overlap with Achnalt Marshes, reduced boundary to SPA, and renamed from Central Highland Hills and Glens. JNCC boundary, digitised to 1:10,000, used.
