Site details
Site description: This west coast estuary is of outstanding physiographic interest for its sand-dune complex, extensive tract of actively-growing raised mire and diverse flood-plain habitats. The sand-dune system comprises all stages of dune formation and associated flora. The IBA is important for wintering wildfowl. Anser albifrons are the flavirostris subspecies.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: First identified in 1989 as Cors Fochno and Dyfi; boundary reduced to SPA, with additional feeding area to the north-east in 2007, and renamed to Dyfi Estuary/Aber Dyfi. 2000 area, 3792ha. SPA boundary used from JNCC; digitised at 1:10,000 scale. Additional area added on 1:50,000 maps.
