Site details

Site description: A section of coast at the tip of the Llyn peninsula together with the island of Bardsey and the smaller Gwylan islands. The coastline is rocky with many crags, screes and low cliffs. Maritime heathland dominated by Calluna and Ulex is diversified by flushes and adjoining grassland. A rich fern and bryophyte flora occurs on Bardsey, whilst sea spray and guano influence the Gwylan flora. The site is important for breeding seabirds and other cliff-nesting species.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Delineation rationale: First identified in 1989 as Bardsey Island and Aberdaron Coast; renamed in 1992 to Glannau Aberdaron and Ynys Enlli (Aberdaron Coast and Bardsey Island); renamed again in 2007 to current name. SPA boundary used from JNCC; digitised at 1:10,000 scale.
