Site details

Site description: The site comprises the cliffs on the western side of Holy Island, which are formed from geologically complex and impressively folded strata rising to 120 m. There are also many small offshore stacks and islets. The IBA is important for seabirds and other cliff-breeders.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: First identified in 1989 as Holy Island Coast; renamed in 1992 as Glannau Ynys Gybi; adjusted to match the SPA boundary in 2007, and given current name. 2000 boundary was 352ha. SPA boundary used from JNCC; digitised at 1:10,000 scale.
