Site details
Site description: The principal stands of this remnant Caledonian pine Pinus sylvestris forest lie south-west of Carrbridge on either side of the River Dulnain. The stocking is irregular, with dense stands of mature woodland separated by open moorland with scattered trees. Broadleaved woodland, Juniperus scrub, moorland, wet heathland and fen areas occur within the forest. The site is notable for breeding pinewood species.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: First identified in 1989 as Kinveachy; renamed in 2007 and boundary reduced to SPA. 2000 area, 5250ha. SPA boundary used from JNCC; digitised at 1:10,000 scale.
