Site details

Site description: A series of flooded medieval peat-diggings situated within the flood-plains of five principal river valley systems. The IBA comprises a mosaic of reed Phragmites, fringed shallow lakes, open water, fen habitats, carr woodland and grazing-marshes. The IBA is important for a wide variety of breeding and wintering birds.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: First identified in 1989 as four separate sites, which were then combined in 1992 as Norfolk Broads (Yare Broads and Marshes, Upper Thurne Broads and Marshes, Ant Broads and Marshes, Bure Broads and Marshes) along with Breydon Water; renamed as Broadland in 2000, with Breydon Water split out as a separate IBA. SPA boundary used from JNCC; digitised at 1:10,000 scale.
