Site details


Site description: An artificial water body situated in the Pentland Hills. No emergent vegetation is present. This reservoir is of outstanding importance as a winter roost for Anser brachyrhynchus, and wintering waterbirds.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Delineation rationale: First identified in 1989 as Westwater; renamed in 2007. SPA boundary used from JNCC; digitised at 1:10,000 scale.
