Site details

Site description: Freshwater pools formed by peat-cutting in the pre-Alps, south of Lago d'Iseo. The pools are fringed by reedbeds, wet meadows and woodlands. Most of the peat was extracted after the Second World War. The main land-uses are nature conservation and recreation activities.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: A breeding and wintering site for waterbirds and reedbed passerines.
Delineation rationale: Area changed from 325ha to 376ha (Brunner, Celada, Rossi & Gustin, 2002).

Threats

Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: The main problems are posed by poor control over recreational activities, and over water management in the surrounding area (`Other' threat), as well as water pollution from domestic and agricultural sources. Some or all of the site is covered by a management plan. Research on breeding bird populations is carried out regularly.
