Site details
Site description: An area of steppe and maquis in southern Italy, north-west of the town of Taranto. The site includes the historical town of Matera, and is incised by streams, which have created canyons and gorges. Most of the land is agricultural.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: Important numbers of Falco naumanni breed in Matera town.
