Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: IBA Trigger species: Grey-faced Petrel, Little Shearwater (Northern), Fluttering Shearwater, Common Diving Petrel, White-faced Storm-petrel, Red-fronted Parakeet. Besides the trigger species the following are confirmed or likely to breeding or resident at this site: Little Penguin, Sooty Shearwater, Pied Shag, White-faced Heron, Variable Oystercatcher, Southern Black-backed Gull, Red-billed Gull, NZ Pigeon, Shining Cuckoo, Long-tailed Cuckoo, NZ Kingfisher, Welcome Swallow, Grey Warbler, North Is-land Fantail, Silvereye, Bellbird, Tui, Brown Quail, Rock Pigeon, Skylark, Hedge Sparrow, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Yellow-hammer, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, House Sparrow, Starling. Other species recorded: Black Shag, Little Black Shag, White-fronted Tern.
