Site details


Site description: A complex of brackish wetlands on the south-east Sardinian coast, close to the village of Muravera. There are sand-dunes and beaches.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The site is important for breeding Larus audouinii. Breeding species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Falco naumanni (min. 2 pairs).

Threats


Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: The main threats are wetland drainage, water pollution by untreated domestic sewage, and the building of new infrastructure (new roads to tourist resorts). The area has been proposed as a Regional Nature Reserve (Stagno di Colostrai).
