Site details


Site description: A freshwater wetland (157 ha) in the central Apennines, close to the village of Colfiorito. The wetland is fringed by a reedbed and the site includes the surrounding hilly areas (Piani di Ricciano, Piani di Arvello, Piano di Annifo).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: An important breeding site for reedbed species, especially Botaurus stellaris.

Threats


Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: The main threats are agricultural intensification (leading to wetland drainage, and water pollution with nutrients and pesticides), hunting around the wetland, and a road-building project which will cross the area. Some or all of the site is covered by a management plan. Ornithological research takes place.
