Site details

Site description: The IBA comprises hills of volcanic origin, situated south and east of the Ohre river. A crater with a diameter of c.30 km forms a central depression, with fish-ponds and water reservoirs located on the periphery of the IBA. Fagus forests support a species-rich herb layer, and scree forests also occur. A mosaic of grassland, shrub and broadleaved coppice communities has developed on abandoned agricultural land. Whilst military training is a major land-use, the IBA remains relatively unaffected by human activity.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The IBA supports large numbers of forest and grassland species. The first complete data on avifauna were obtained during a 1987-1989 study, and 220 bird species have now been recorded.
