Site details

Site description: A shallow saline fjord area with shoals and islands, coastal saltmarsh and agricultural land.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: The site was very important for wintering ducks (in total more than 20,000 individuals, with eight species fulfilling IBA criteria). However, numbers declined sharply during the 1980s, presumably because of deteriorating water quality, and by 1993 insufficient numbers were present to fulfil the criteria. Recurvirostra avosetta, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, breeds at the site.
