Site details

Site description: A narrow strait including islands and peninsulas with coves, lagoons, saltmarshes, reedbeds, broadleaved forests, cultivated land and some scattered habitation.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: Up to seven waterbird species are present in significant numbers during cold winters, totalling over 20,000 individuals. Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna paradisaea and S. albifrons.
Delineation rationale: Type 2 marine IBA: non-breeding (coastal) congregations.
