Site details


Site description: Mainly open agricultural land on a drained former lake with some small plantations. The site also includes two shallow lakes surrounded by reedbeds with Alnus forest and some heathland.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: An exceptionally important staging area, particularly for Anser brachyrhynchus and A. anser. Botaurus stellaris, Branta leucopsis, Circus aeruginosus and Lanius collurio, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, breed at the site.

Threats


Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: In 1994 the first phase of a large restoration project to remove invasive Salix, Pinus mugo and other trees was implemented; the water-level was raised by 30 cm and further increases are planned.
