Site details

Site description: A raised bog and forest, including highly valuable areas of mature (nearly primary) Fagus, Quercus and Tilia woodland.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: Numbers of breeding birds have declined at this site over the last 20 years and Tetrao tetrix has not bred since the 1980s. Nevertheless the site remains an important area for heathland and wetland birds and more recently some species' populations have started to increase as a result of habitat restoration efforts. Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including Pernis apivorus, Circus aeruginosus, C. pygargus, Tringa glareola, Chlidonias niger, Asio flammeus, Dryocopus martius and Lanius collurio.
