Site details

Site description: Islands and peninsulas in shallow fjord areas with cultivated land and scattered habitation as well as grasslands, saltmarshes and reedbeds. Marine areas surrounding this IBA (and previously included within it, following Grimmett and Jones 1989) are now included in Smålandsfarvandet (site 118).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: This is an important site for migrating waterbirds (regularly more than 20,000 individuals present in total). Non-breeding numbers exclude birds from Avnø Fjord and Karrebæksminde Fjord. Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site including Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna hirundo, S. paradisaea, S. albifrons and Lanius collurio.
Delineation rationale: 2009-08-21 (BL Secretariat): area changed to 18,862 ha (T. Vikstrom in litt.)
