Site details

Site description: A sea area with shoals and banks, coastal slopes and uninhabited islands. Some areas are enclosed by dykes. Terrestrial habitats (totalling 5% of the IBA) include broadleaved woodland, saltmarshes, reedbeds, small plantations, agricultural areas, sandflats, dunes and beaches.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: Of high importance for waterbirds (regularly more than 20,000 present in total). Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (non-breeding). Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including Botaurus stellaris, Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna sandvicensis, S. hirundo, S. paradisaea and S. albifrons.
Delineation rationale: Type 2 marine IBA: non-breeding (coastal) congregations.
