Site details

Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: 2016-02-08 (Marguerite Tarzia): this IBA, which comprises one of three large communal roost-sites of Phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii along the Slovenian coast, has been extended from 90 ha to cover a coastal belt of sea down to 10 m depth between Debeli rtič and Port of Koper. This area is regularly used by large dense foraging groups of Mediterranean Shags of up to 310 individuals, as proved by the data collected between 2011 and 2015. GPS telemetry data was used as a supplemental data layer. The site seems to be a candidate for a transboundary IBA, as the communal roost-site is split by the SLO-ITA border.
