Site details
Site description: A shallow sea area with several cultivated and inhabitated islands and some uninhabited islets with forest, reedbeds and saltmarshes. The majority of forest is plantation, however, tiny but valuable patches of old-growth forest occur. Marine areas surrounding this IBA (and previously included within it following Grimmett and Jones 1989) are included in Smålandsfarvandet (site 118).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Philomachus pugnax, Sterna hirundo, S. paradisaea and S. albifrons.
