Site details
Site description: A fjord area with shoals, banks and islands (a few of which are inhabitated) with saltmarsh, reedbeds and freshwater ponds, and smaller areas of woodland, beaches and dunes.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: This is an important area for wintering Cygnus cygnus and C. olor, although numbers are currently lower than in 1983 when more than 20,000 waterbirds were recorded: numbers are believed to be higher in harsh winters. Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna sandvicensis, S. hirundo, S. paradisaea and S. albifrons, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, bred at the site; several of these species still breed but data are incomplete.
